TheUndercurrent
Long-form conversations with the people who know what happened beneath the surface.
The story people know is rarely the whole story.
The Undercurrent is a documentary interview series from Coastal Virginia built around patient, carefully produced conversations. Each episode gives a guest room to explain the experience, profession, conflict or turning point that cannot be understood through headlines, assumptions or a thirty-second clip.
Watch the series.
New conversations are released as they are completed. Each episode is designed to stand on its own while building a larger portrait of the people and systems around us.
David Goldberg
Polygraph Examiner · A conversation about truth, credibility and what people misunderstand about the polygraph process.
Jerome Scurry Jr.
Retired Virginia Beach Police Officer · A long-form conversation from inside a career most people only encounter from the outside.
Every community has two stories.
The one above the surface—and the one underneath.
These are not performances or rapid-fire interviews. They are carefully produced, long-form conversations with people who can bring context to experiences that are often misunderstood, overlooked or flattened into a headline.
The goal is not sensationalism. The goal is understanding.
Where the deeper story lives.
The series follows the human experience behind public events, private conflicts and the moments that permanently alter a life.
Conflict & Consequence
Crime, justice, family disputes and the decisions that continue shaping lives long after the public story ends.
Survival & Identity
Loss, faith, pressure, recovery and the difficult work of rebuilding a life after circumstances change it.
The Story Beneath
The missing context behind institutions, professions, court records, public assumptions and simplified narratives.
Know a story worth going beneath the surface?
We are interested in people with lived experience, professional perspective or a story that can help others understand something differently.
Submitting a suggestion does not commit anyone to appearing. Potential conversations begin privately.
Coastal Virginia Investigations
The Undercurrent is an original documentary series presented by Coastal Virginia Investigations. It reflects a simple belief shared by both projects: meaningful conclusions require context, careful listening and a willingness to look beyond what is immediately visible.
The Undercurrent is an editorial project. Story submissions are separate from investigative inquiries and are reviewed independently for editorial consideration.
Some stories deserve more than the surface.
